Parent Coaching

 

Whether you are a new parent, the parent of a child who has special needs, or simply feeling stuck in your caregiver role, parent coaching may be the right answer for you.

 

Parent coaching is goal directed and involves ‘doing’ things to change the situation.  It focuses on enhancing functioning today in order to prevent challenges in the future. Coaching tasks and goals are determined based on the unique presenting needs of the child/family and are guided by developmental knowledge of typical versus atypical development.

 

I rely strongly on my understanding of child development to help set parenting goals.  By using a small steps approach, we can work together to help your child and family get, or stay on track.

 

 

 

Adoption Coaching

 

When families prepare to unite through adoption, there is much that anticipating parents can do to assist with their child and family’s successful union and adjustment.  Children exiting foster care, orphanage life, abuse, or neglect, need parents who are knowledgeable about how these early experiences influence and impact the young child’s ability to trust and interact appropriately with others.  Addressing these needs early will significantly help to enhance the child's development in all areas as well as overall family functioning.  Adoption competent early intervention can also help to prevent difficulties later.

When children are forming attachment relationships past infancy, there are special considerations and parenting practices that needed in order to help the child develop security and trust. Creating a family environment of interdependence is very important. Doing this can be a challenge for parents, especially since society places such a significant emphasis on child independence.  Doing this before attachment is developed however is not wise.  A significant focus of work when a child unites with his or her parents past infancy, is to create a strong and secure 'attachment' relationship.  Once this is established, other areas of development can thrive.

Using my specialized knowledge and extensive experience supporting families uniting through adoption, I will help parents create a toolbox of approaches to help them reach specific goals related to their family's development.
